Friday Reads 4th December 2015

Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice, the idea is to grab a book, turn to page 56 (or 56% in an e-book) and find any sentence (no spoilers!) and then post it. Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are currently reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence and impressions about the book.

Ann:

The Willows in Winter (Tales of the Willows, #1)Daisy Miller
I have decided to start re-reading The Willows in Winter as my Christmas book for December. I am also still reading my Classic book for the month which is Daisy Miller by Henry James.

Book Beginning & Friday 56:

""O my!" murmured Mr Mole of Mole End most unhappily as he stoked up his coal fire against the bitter December night. "O dear!" - Page 1, The Willows in Winter
"He soon found that his arsenal consisted of one fountain pen, a silver fruit knife (the one with a shell handle that had been his mother's) a handkerchief and, ow! a large safety pin!" - Page 56, The Willows in Winter
I love it. I also love the detail. I have already read this once before and I loved it then so I can't wait to enjoy it again.

Clare:

Infinityglass (Hourglass, #3)The Infinite Loop (The Infinite Loop, Tome 1)The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

I've started Infinityglass by Myra McEntire which is book 3 in the Hourglass series, I have reviews up for the first two books Hourglass and Timepiece and I am excited to complete the series and find out what happens. I am then planning to read The Infinite Loop which is a bind up of the first 3 volumes in the series. I have been wanting to read this for a while, I have had a flip through and liked the artwork so I hope I will enjoy it. I am also still reading my Classic from November which is The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, I am enjoying this but progressing very slowly.

Book Beginning & Friday 56:

""The only reason you want my help is so you can see my girls in a corset," I said." - Page 1, Infinityglass
"I stared at the dragonfly, still bumping against the glass. You'd think it would've given up by now." - Page 56, Infinityglass
Both of these quotes are from Hallie's perspective and she is a character we haven't met before in the series so I hope I like her. Although it does look like the book will have different perspectives which is new since both the first and the second book were told from a first person perspective of one character, though a different character for each book. So I hope it's done well!

You can also find us on Goodreads (Ann and Clare) to keep up with what we are reading

  3. It is balmy summer here in South Africa, so The Willows in Winter would be a great antidote to all that. The writing is beautiful.

  4. Both books sound good. I haven't started the hourglass series yet but have seen it around. I am spotlighting both and alternate history book - The Inquisitor's Apprentice by Chris Moriarty - and a thriller - She Can Kill by Melinda Leigh - today. Happy reading!

  6. I didn't realize there was another Willow's tale. I'd love to read it. All of these are new to me except for the classic. Which I read so long ago.

  7. I've never read any Henry James though I want to. I didn't realize there was a sequel to A Wind in the Willows! Sounds like a lovely Christmas book.

    1. It's a little heavy to read, I definitely don't think I could read huge chunks of it at a time but the characters and description are brilliant!

    1. It's a great series, I have reviews up for each of the books in the series now. It's sort of time travel with some other assorted powers in there as well!
