Clare Reviews: Infinityglass by Myra McEntire

Infinityglass (Hourglass, #3)Title: Infinityglass
Author: Myra McEntire
Series: Hourglass #3
Format: Hardback
Pages: 293
Rating: 3.5/5
Blurb: No time like the present.
No time in the present.
No time left.
From the moment the Hourglass group violated the rules of the space time continuum to rescue a murdered loved one, time has been in flux. People from other centuries slide into our time, intruding into our space, threatening our world.
Frantically seeking a way to turn back this tide, the Hourglass begins a search for the legendary Infinityglass, tracking it to the city of New Orleans, a place where the past rests easily with the present.
Quiet, reliable Dune, the group's favourite geek, is selected to travel to the Crescent City and somehow retrieve the renowned object.
But there's a problem.
Because the Infinityglass is not an object, it's a person.
A beautiful, headstrong dancer named Hallie, a girl so enticing Dune can't take his eyes off her.
And time is not on her side.

“That's just blood. And in my book? Choice wins out over blood every time."
I have been completely engrossed by this series since the first sentence of Hourglass and I thought this was an excellent ending - although in some ways I wish the series was longer. This time we get both Hallie and Dune's perspectives (and an epilogue of Emerson's) and I definitely thought that was a good idea.

Hallie was a great character but, since I hadn't met her before this book, it took me a while to get to know her and to feel totally comfortable in her perspective. I was a little more comfortable in Dune's and I did like him but I felt like the most character growth was Hallie's. We do get to see the characters from the first two books but they only show up toward the end so much of the book is Hallie and Dune getting to know each other.

In terms of plot I thought this was a little unevenly paced. The first half of the book was mostly Hallie messing with Dune and then opening up to them, and one (very small, very quick) heist. The last half of the book is where all the action from Timepiece gets picked back up and it was definitely that half that I preferred. Whilst I did enjoy the beginning and seeing into Hallie's world I felt like we never really see enough of it to get caught up in. Her father is pretty much a crime boss and I wanted to know more of what her life was like in that respect.

Because most of the action occurs towards the end of the book, the beginning also has a much lighter, contemporary feel to it. But I really liked how, once everything got intense again, the plot twists and betrayals constantly surprised me. I never saw any of it coming and I was definitely excited to see how everything would be resolved. The time travel aspect wasn't as prevalent here, although the characters did occasionally fall through into a different time and whilst I was a little confused still I thought I had a better handle on it than I had in Timepiece which was nice.

As I said, I almost wish this series wasn't finished. Although everything was wrapped up nicely and I liked the ending, and the epilogue, there are a few characters I want to see more of (Poe, Ava and Nate) and I just know that with all the powers these characters have they must get into more trouble after this. Is it wrong of me to hope for a spin off series?

Although this wasn't the strongest book of the series I still thought it was a great conclusion to what has been a really fun and exciting series and I do definitely recommend it. I look forward to reading more by Myra McEntire - with these characters or without. Though preferably with.

  1. I've been following your reviews on this entire series, so I'm glad that while this wasn't your favorite book in the series, you're still satisfied with the conclusion. But I think it's nice that you got to see the other characters at the end. That kind of thing always makes my heart happy when I'm reading. Great review!

    1. I think I just didn't love the two characters in this as much as I loved the ones in previous books! But still a good ending! Thanks for visiting!
