Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2016

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted at The Broke & The Bookish. You can find the link up for this week's topic here and a list of past and future topics here

1) Ruta Sepetys
Salt to the Sea
Salt to the Sea was one of the first books I read this year and has left a real lasting impression on me. I find myself wanting to mention it constantly and throwing it at people who ask for historical fiction recommendations (not literally the book might get damaged). I haven't read anything else by Sepetys yet but her other books are definitely on my 2017 TBR!

2) Sarah Morgan
Sleepless In Manhattan (From Manhattan with Love, #1)
I picked Sleepless in Manhattan up on a whim because hey, it's a pretty cover and also I really wanted some new contemporary romance in a Sophie Kinsella style. And then I proceeded to fall in love. Sarah Morgan has a great writing style and really makes you believe in her characters and in the romance.

3) Cecilia Ekback
In the Month of the Midnight Sun
I did a review of In the Month of the Midnight Sun and I am pretty sure I reviewed her first novel Wolf Winter way back at the beginning of the year as well. It's really apparent how much her writing has grown between books. In the Month of the Midnight Sun was such a brilliant and absorbing novel and my favourite part will always be the Mountain which has such presence.

4) Melissa Landers
Starflight (Starflight, #1)
2016 was the year I discovered Sci-Fi. It's always been a genre I thought I didn't like (because I can never wrap my head around the science) but Starflight was one of the ones I really got into this year. It was light and fun but with some great characters and exciting plot. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed These Broken Stars.

5) Heidi Heilig
The Girl from Everywhere (The Girl From Everywhere, #1)
This was such an original and exciting idea. I love the characters and I can tell this is a series I will get really invested in over time. I love both the American and UK covers and I am very excited for book 2 to be released in 2017!

6) Cindy Anstey
Love, Lies and Spies
Just the cutest. This was Young Adult Historical Romance which is not a genre I think I'd really tried before. I loved the character development and read this in one sitting. Cindy Anstey has a second book being released next year which I already have pre-ordered!

7) Tessa Dare
Do You Want to Start a Scandal (Spindle Cove, #5)
For some more Adult Historical Romance I discovered Tessa Dare! I discovered her books reasonably early on in the year and have now caught up on everything she has published so begin the wait for her next book! She has immediately leapt to almost the top of my favourite authors in this genre and I am very much looking forward to whatever she writes next!

8) Jill Shalvis
Sweet Little Lies (Heartbreaker Bay, #1)
I reviewed Sweet Little Lies a little while ago and absolutely loved it. I then read a few of her other books which I also enjoyed and The Trouble with Mistletoe is next up on my TBR pile - which is another one I anticipate loving!

9) Katherine Clements
The Silvered Heart
This book surprised me a lot. The main character, Kate, was a lot more complicated than I had anticipated. She was often very unlikable and I loved that. I also really enjoyed how Katherine Clements made the story adapt to being told from Kate's point of view. You can really see how different certain characters might appear from a third person perspective but being in Kate's mind alters your whole perception!

10) Nalini Singh
Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1)
This one I owe to Veronika @The Regal Crititiques who recommended this series to me. I've only read the first book so far (the second and third books are on their way to me) and it is a long series so might be a while until I am fully caught up. But I love the idea of having a long series to catch up on. The characters in this were really well drawn and felt very real to me and I really enjoyed the world building - I especially look forward to understanding more about the world and the characters as the series progresses.

So those are the top ten authors I discovered in 2016! Let me know what authors you discovered this year - I'd love to get some recommendations for 2017!

You can also find us on Goodreads (Ann and Clare) to keep up with what we are reading.

  2. Melissa and Cindy are both authors who have books I'd like to try. In the case of the former, I own a couple of her books, so there's really no good excuse NOT to read them. :)

  8. OMG, NALINI IS ON YOUR LIST!!! I'm so glad my rec worked out for you and can't wait to see your opinion on the rest of the series. I've been meaning to read something by Ruta Sepetys & actually own two of her books, but I never seem to be in the mood for them. :( Also, I LOVED Tessa Dare's Castles Ever After s. and need to read more by her.

    1. I am very much looking forward to the rest of the series! I agree you have to be in the right mood for a Ruta Sepetys book - Salt to the Sea was very intense! I love Tessa Dare's books - I actually think her Spindle Cove series is even better than her Castles Ever After series!
