Sunday Post 9th October 2016

The Sunday Post STSmall_thumb[2]
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted at Caffeinated Book Reviewer, it's a chance to post a recap on the past week, show the books we have received and share what we plan for the coming week. Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews and the aim is to show our newest books and to see what everyone else received for review, borrowed from libraries, bought in bookshops or downloaded on to their e-reader. As always you can click on any of the pictures to be taken to the Goodreads page for that book if you're interested in finding out more about it.

Last Week on the Blog:

Books We Got This Week:

Radio GirlsThe Edge of the FallDeath Wears a Mask (Amory Ames Mystery, #2)
Radio Girls by Sarah-Jane Stratford: I've been eyeing this book for a while and decided to take a chance on it. It's set in the 1920's in the BBC radio and tells a true story from the perspective of a fictional character which sounds intriguing.
The Edge of the Fall by Kate Williams: This is also set in the 1920's I believe. I got this believing it to be a standalone but have now discovered that it is the second in a trilogy so I think I will have to hunt the first book up.
Death Wears a Mask by Ashley Weaver: I knew this wasn't the first book in the series but I am always looking for more historical mystery novels. Especially one described as reminiscent of Agatha Christie. This is also the second book in the series so will be picking up the first one soon.
The Ghosts of HeavenBright Smoke, Cold Fire (Untitled, #1)Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor
The Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick: The format of this book really intrigues me. It's a new arrival at my local library so I had to grab it. It's told in four sections that can be read in any sequence - if you've read this let me know what order you read them in!
Bright Smoke, Cold Fire by Rosamund Hodge: I have been eagerly anticipating this one. Rosamund Hodge is such a wonderful writer and I have loved her previous books. I've heard some mixed things about this one but I read the prologue and was captivated so I am excited!
Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan: My copy of this is so shiny and beautiful in real life but in a picture it does not look impressive! I love Rick Riordan's writing and humour so this should be great!
Replica (Replica, #1)Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden FruitDo You Want to Start a Scandal (Spindle Cove, #5)
Replica by Lauren Oliver: Definitely one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I read the first sentences for each side and Lyra is definitely the one who grabbed my attention the most... I am looking forward to reading this soon!
Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit by Jaye Robin Brown: So very excited for this one! Haven't read any reviews for this as I want to go in blind but I definitely want to read this soon.
Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare: This is the 5th novel in the Spindle Cove series and I am looking forward to what should be a very fun and romantic read!
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2)Shadow Falling (The Scorpius Syndrome, #2)The Trouble with Mistletoe (Heartbreaker Bay, #2)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling and Jim Kay: So beautiful. Just like the first one. I may have to do a Harry Potter re-read soon for both of these.
Shadow Falling by Rebecca Zanetti: I was sent a copy of this by Headline Eternal and I am super excited to get reading. The blurb sounds plenty exciting. It is the second in the series and whilst I think they can be read separately I may try to get a copy of Mercury Striking before I read this.
The Trouble with Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis: I was very, very excited to receive a copy of this from Headline Eternal as well. It was one of my most anticipated September reads and it should be an amazing book to read for Christmas! I loved the first book in the series (review here) so I am confident I will enjoy this!

Reading Update:

Ann:
The Beautiful and the Cursed (The Dispossessed, #1)
The Beautiful and the Cursed by Page Morgan: 5 stars, I loved this book so much and was going to read the 2nd book in the series but I got distracted reading Six Of Crows. Overall I loved this book a lot and will be reading the next books in the series soon!

Clare:
Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2)Three Dark Crowns (Untitled, #1)This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1)
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo: 5 stars, Hands down the best book of the year so far. This is a worthy sequel to Six of Crows. I so nearly went into a book slump after reading this because how can you keep reading after you've read something so brilliant! I feel like I have been constantly gushing about this duology for weeks now - it deserves it but still - so I'll just say that I need more books in this world. Preferably with these characters.
Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake: 4 stars, I think this was a good book to read after Crooked Kingdom. It was dark but it was also slow which was good since the change of pace prevented me from comparing the two. This is definitely a very character driven book and I can tell that everyone is going to have their favourite of the sisters. Mine is Mirabelle which is unfortunate as I have the Arsinoe cover - but I am interested to see where the second book is going to go!
This Savage Song by V.E. Schwab: 4.5 stars, The writing is beautiful and I loved the characters. I felt like I didn't really get into the story until about halfway through though. On the other hand the last few chapters were intense. So many plot twists and huge events happening and a bit of a cliffhanger at the end which makes me very excited for the rest of the series.

  2. Death Wears A Mask looks good, I read the first one Murder at the Brightwell and loved it, so I hope you enjoy it. The third one's on the way too. I haven't actually seen that cover of The Hammer of Thor, so that's interesting. And Replica I'm reading now, and I like Lyra's perspective better too. :)

the Beautiful and the Cursed looks interesting too, and I really want to read Three Dark Crowns after seeing all the reviews.

    1. I really need to get Murder at the Brightwell soon because this series looks great! It's the UK cover and one of the few times I really prefer the US cover, but ah well! At least it matches my copy of the first book! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Replica. I want to get to it soon!
Three Dark Crowns was a really good book in my opinion, I know some people are disappointed by the pace but I thought it was a great start to the series!

    1. If you've already read and re-read it then it really must be a great book! Looking forward to that and The Trouble with Mistletoe a lot - romances are probably my favourite genre around the end of the year so I know I will be reading them soon!
I had to pre-order CK, I could never have been patient enough to wait for it! Fingers crossed the 15 people ahead of you read really, really fast!

  7. I love the cover of that Magnus Chase book. I also am thinking about grabbing Three Dark Crowns if Walmart has it when I run there tonight. I wish the cover here was as good as the one you showed. I also have Replica on hold at the library when it arrives. Great bunch of books this week!
