Friday Reads 16th September 2016

Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice and Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. The idea is to share a sentence or so from the first page and the 56th page of the book you are currently reading!

The Unseeing
I have just started reading The Unseeing and already I have high hopes for it. I had considered saving it for closer to Halloween but it's just really been calling to me. I love the tagline "A good lie always comes back to haunt you" and the plot has a lot of promise!

Book Beginning:
"Through her left eye she could see nothing now. Through her right, Hannah could make out the flame of one candle that still burned, guttering and shivering low in its puddle of wax. It was only the candlelight that convinced her she was still alive. The fire was dying in the grate and the coldness of the flagstones had seeped into her bones, leaving her as icy and insubstantial as the snow that fell outside."

Friday 56:
""And you saw James Greenacre at the lodging house on Christmas Day, the day following the murder. Did he give nothing away?" Edmund did not say it, but it occurred to him that Greenacre must have come to Christmas dinner straight from chopping up the body. He had a horrible vision of him carving the roast."
Hannah is the name of the murdered character so I know that the book beginning must be her last moments. I think the beginning does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere and of making me care about a character that I already know is dead - I still somehow want her to survive! And the Friday 56 is, I think, part of an interrogation, I really like the mixture of the prosaic and the gruesome. I think this will definitely be a novel I will enjoy and I am interested to see how much the author plays on our perception of the main character - is she guilty or isn't she??!

You can also find us on Goodreads (Ann and Clare) to keep up with what we are reading
