Sunday Post 6th November 2016

STSmall_thumb[2]
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted at Caffeinated Book Reviewer, it's a chance to post a recap on the past week, show the books we have received and share what we plan for the coming week. Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews and the aim is to show our newest books and to see what everyone else received for review, borrowed from libraries, bought in bookshops or downloaded on to their e-reader. As always you can click on any of the pictures to be taken to the Goodreads page for that book if you're interested in finding out more about it.

Last Week on the Blog:

Books We Got This Week:

Clare:
The Enemy (The Enemy, #1)The Dead (The Enemy, #2)The Fear (The Enemy, #3)Mercury Striking (The Scorpius Syndrome, #1)
The Enemy/The Dead/The Fear by Charlie Higson: I've seen this series around lately - so I picked up the set of the first three books from The Works. I feel like these would have been great to read around Halloween so I am a little late getting these but I am still really interested to read them!
Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti: This is the first book in the series - I was sent the second for review a couple of weeks ago and although I think they can be read as stand-alones I kind of want to do the series in order.
The DiabolicThe LiberationThe Quest (Sanshlian Series, #1)Bring Up the Bodies (Thomas Cromwell, #2)
The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid: I actually got the black cover of this which I am super excited about because it looks so dramatic and gorgeous! Honestly such a beautiful cover! I have been hearing some interesting things about this lately and I am excited to read it soon!
The Liberation by Kate Furnivall: I am really looking forward to this one. I have loved some of Kate Furnivall's other books and one set in Italy sounds like something I would really enjoy!
The Quest by Dani Hoots: Dani was kind enough to send me a signed copy of her book for review and I am so, so excited for this one! I've already read the prologue and enjoyed it a lot so I am sure the rest of the book will be just as great!
Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel: This is the second book in the Thomas Cromwell series which I have been really wanting to read! My Mum grabbed this for me as it was a beautiful hardback copy for only £2!
The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1)The Angel's Game (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #2)YesternightStalking Jack the Ripper (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #1)Heartless
The Shadow of the Wind/The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon: I don't know much about this series but I've heard good things and my Mum said she read the first page and knew she had to get it for me which has me intrigued!
Yesternight by Cat Winters: I always love Cat Winters' books so I am very excited for this one as well! I also really love this cover!
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco: I have been eagerly anticipating this one and I am very excited to read it!
Heartless by Marissa Meyer: Oh my god this book! I mean the cover is beautiful already but if you take off the dust jacket the naked book cover is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Seriously can't stop staring at it! Also - this is a retelling/origin story for the Queen of Hearts which was always going to excite me!

Ann:
Geek Girl (Geek Girl, #1)One by One (Robert Hunter, #5)No Such Thing as Immortality
Geek Girl by Holly Smale: I saw this one in a charity shop this week and I decided that I would get it as I have wanted to read this book for a while now!
One By One by Chris Carter: I also brought this book from a charity shop this week and I loved it as soon as I read the blurb because it sounds like the kind of book that I am going to really enjoy!
No Such Thing As Immortality by Sarah Tranter: I brought this yesterday and I don't know much about it but I thought that it looked really good!

Reading Update:

Ann:
The Female of the SpeciesGeek Girl (Geek Girl, #1)
The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis: 5 stars, I don't even know what to say about this book, it was such an emotional rollercoaster and also was an incredible book. This is also the only book that has ever made me cry which just proves that it is an amazing book!
Geek Girl by Holly Smale: 4 stars, I feel like I would have preferred this book if the story moved on a bit faster as I felt that the real story didn't really start happening till half way through the book.

Clare:
With MaliceA Most Novel Revenge (Amory Ames Mystery #3)The Female of the SpeciesYesternight
With Malice by Eileen Cook: 3.5 stars, I thought this was a very interesting read. I did figure out most of the mystery early on but the ending is left a little open to interpretation so it's impossible to completely figure out what happened although I do know what I believe.
A Most Novel Revenge by Ashley Weaver: 4 stars, I enjoyed this more than the second book. I thought the characters had developed a lot and their relationships were more interesting to watch unfold. The mystery was very good although still not as compelling as the first in the series, which is still my favourite of the series so far. I look forward to reading more of this series.
The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis: 5 stars, This book was so emotionally traumatising. There is a definite trigger warning for this and it affected me a lot more than I had even anticipated (and I was anticipating a lot) but I think it is such an honest book and I highly, highly recommend it.
Yesternight by Cat Winters: 4.5 stars, I wouldn't say this was my absolute favourite Cat Winters book - but it was still a really amazing, tense read. There were also plenty of twists and the last chapter left me reeling.

  1. I just recently heard of The Diabolic and am curious. Also, the Geek Girl books sound SO cute. Someday I'm reading them because who doesn't love a "geeky" character - plus I can so relate. ;)

'Jack Ripper' also looks dramatic and really good!

  4. The Quest looks quite good (I'm such a cover judger) and Yesternight looks nice too. And No Such Thing as Immortality- interesting title and cover!

I really liked Murder at the Brightwell and was a little afraid I might not like the sequels as much. I still want to read them though. And The Smoke Hunter- I'll have to check out the post for that.

I don't like the sequels quite as much as the first but they are still really great mysteries! The Smoke Hunter is a book I am very excited for!

  6. Clare, I'm exactly like you when it comes to reading sequels! Even if they can technically be read as stand-alones, I always like to read in publication order. That way I can catch all the Easter eggs! I'm going to be reading The Diabolic once I'm done with my current reads! I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it!

I really want to read The Female of the Species now that both of you gave it five stars! I'm checking it out on goodreads now. :) I've heard that the mystery is pretty easy to guess in With Malice, so I'm a bit hesitant to even pick it up.

Great post! Have a great week!

    1. I always feel like there is a lot of information in the earlier books which enriches the reading even if it isn't exactly necessary! Plus if earlier books characters make an appearance - I want to have known their story first!
I am definitely interested to see what you think of The Diabolic as well!
I really highly recommend The Female of the Species it was such a brilliant book!
With Malice was fairly easy but also had a vaguely unsatisfying ending - i would definitely recommend Dangerous Girls more!
