Friday Reads 8th January 2016

Ann:

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2)The Hunt (The Hunt, #1)
This weekend I plan on finishing Crown of Midnight and then I will be reading The Hunt but I also have to try and find a book that is appropriate to read for English due to a new reading scheme that we are doing.

Clare:

A Book of Spirits and Thieves (Spirits and Thieves, #1)Passenger (Passenger, #1)Prisoner of Night and Fog (Prisoner of Night and Fog, #1)
I have just started reading A Book of Spirits and Thieves which I am extremely excited for. Having just finished Frozen Tides I am not quite ready to leave this world yet. I am then planning to read Passenger by Alexandra Bracken which is one of my most anticipated releases for 2016 so I have high, high hopes for it! And then I hope to read Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman which I have heard amazing things about. I am very excited for all of my reads this weekend!

Wednesday Catch-Up 6th January 2016

Every Wednesday we are linking up with WWW Wednesday and Waiting on Wednesday. WWW Wednesday is hosted at Taking on a World of Words and asks 3 questions: What are you currently reading?, What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you'll read next?
Waiting on Wednesday is hosted at Breaking the Spine and is a chance to show what upcoming releases you are excited for! Each week we will take it in turns to choose a book for Waiting on Wednesday and this week was Clare's turn! You can click any of the pictures in the post to go to that books goodreads page.

Ann:

Currently Reading:
Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2)A Tale of Two Cities
I am still currently reading Crown of Midnight which I am enjoying but making very slow progress. I have read about 10-20 more pages of A Tale of Two Cities today at school and I am really enjoying it.

Recently Finished:
Pre-Twentieth Century Short Stories Student's Anthology
I recently finished a collection of short stories for my English homework. Some of the stories were okay but most of them I didn't enjoy.

Planning to Read Next:
The Hunt (The Hunt, #1)
Next I still plan on reading The Hunt because it sounds like my kind of book and I look forward to reading it.

Clare:

Currently Reading:
Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms, #2)The Count of Monte Cristo
I have just started Rebel Spring by Morgan Rhodes which I am very excited about as I really enjoyed the first one. I am definitely keen to get up to date on this series! I am also reading The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas which is a horribly enormous book and quite daunting but I've loved everything of his I've read so far so I have high hopes for this.

Recently Finished:
Silver Phoenix (Kingdom of Xia, #1)The Rogue Not Taken (Scandal & Scoundrel)Sorcerer to the Crown (Sorceror Royal, #1)Newt's Emerald
City of a Thousand Dolls (Bhinian Empire, #1)How to Survive a Sharknado and Other Unnatural Disasters: Fight Back When Monsters and Mother Nature AttackFalling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1)
Since last week I finished Silver Phoenix by Cindy Pon which I did enjoy. I am not sure I will read the sequel/companion but I thought this was a good book. I then read The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean which I loved, it wasn't my favourite of her books so far but I still gave it 4.5 stars. Sorcerer to the Crown was a bit of a surprise for me as it started slow and I thought I might not like it but I stuck with it and by the end I was very nearly in love, definitely looking forward to more. And Newt's Emerald is a book I wish wasn't a stand-alone. I think the romance could have benefited from more development but otherwise this was a really fun read. City of a Thousand Dolls was good but didn't blow me away. I have the prequel but I am not sure I will read it just yet. How to Survive a Sharknado has been probably my favourite book of the year. This is clearly a book you'll only enjoy if you're a fan of Sharknado and films like it, but since I am that just made this perfect for me. Very funny and so very informative. I am prepared for all kinds of unnatural disasters now! I then read Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes which I really, really enjoyed. I am loving this series so far.

Planning to Read Next:
Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms, #3)Frozen Tides (Falling Kingdoms, #4)A Book of Spirits and Thieves (Spirits and Thieves, #1)Passenger (Passenger, #1)
I plan to get all caught up with the Falling Kingdoms series and read Gathering Darkness, Frozen Tides and A Book of Spirits and Thieves next (and join the long wait for book 5!) and then I want to read Passenger by Alexandra Bracken which I am very, very excited to read!

Waiting on Wednesday:

Night Study (Soulfinders, #2)
Night Study by Maria V. Snyder
Ever since being kidnapped from the Illiais Jungle as a child, Yelena Zaltana's has been fraught with peril. But the recent loss of her Soulfinding abilities has endangered her more than ever before. As she desperately searches for a way to reclaim her magic, her enemies are closing in, and neither Ixia nor Sitia are safe for her anymore. Especially since the growing discord between the two countries and the possibility of a war threatens everything Yelena holds dear.
Valek is determined to protect Yelena, but he's quickly running out of options. The Commander suspects that his loyalties are divided, and he's been keeping secrets from Valek...secrets that put him, Yelena and all their friends in terrible danger. As they uncover the various layers of the Commander's mysterious plans, they realize it's far more sinister that they could have ever imagined.

Clare: This is genuinely one of my favourite series of all time and I am beyond excited for Night Study!

Academy Award Book Tag

I have a Top Ten Books of 2015 list here and Ann has a Top 5 list here but we thought it would be fun to do this tag as it also includes categories where a book may deserve a mention but didn't make it on to our top lists. We've tried to avoid choosing the same book more than once each.

Best Actor: (Best Male Protagonist)

Girl OnlineThe Heartless CitySix of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)
Ann: Noah from Girl Online. I like Noah but there was a moment in Girl Online On Tour where I thought that he was being such a terrible person. However I changed my mind about him by the end of the book.
Clare: Elliot from The Heartless City/Kaz from Six of Crows. I had to cheat and choose two for this one because they are just such very different characters. I mentioned in my review of The Heartless City how much I loved Elliot - he is a sweet, wonderful character and I just wish I could be friends with him in real life. On the other hand Kaz was so complex and interesting (and he kind of reminded me of my brother) so I had to include them both!

Best Actress: (Best Female Protagonist)

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)Crimson Bound
Ann: Celaena from Throne of Glass. I love Celaena so much she is so amazing,I also feel like I can relate to her a bit.
Clare: Rachelle from Crimson Bound. This was a hard category because there are so, so many amazing female protagonists (and I could easily have gone back to Six of Crows) but I really loved Rachelle's strength and vulnerability and her ability to make hard decisions. She wasn't perfect and I appreciated that.

Best Cinematography: (Best Plot Twist)

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)The Uninvited
Ann: Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This has to be one of the best books I read this year I loved it so so much.
Clare: The Uninvited by Cat Winters. I never saw this plot twist coming. I loved this book as a whole and all her other books as well.

Best Costume Design: (Best Book Cover)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Illustrated version (Harry Potter, #1)Username: Evie
Ann: Username Evie by Joe Sugg. I really like the cover of Username: Evie it is so well designed and detailed. Overall it is a really nice and I love it.
Clare: Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone by J.K. Rowling. There were a lot of beautiful covers this year but I am in love with my illustrated copy of Harry Potter and the cover just makes me so happy.

Best Supporting Actress and Actor: (Best Male and Female Sidekick)

Girl OnlineCity of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments, #6)
The Rest of Us Just Live HereTruly, Madly, Famously
Ann: Elliot from Girl Online/Isabelle from CoHF. I love both of these characters for different reasons so couldn't really decide which one to go for, so I went for them both.
Clare: Jared from The Rest of Us Just Live Here/Alexis from Truly, Madly Famously. Jared was such a huge part of why I loved The Rest of Us Just Live Here and as for Alexis - I desperately want her to have her own spin off series!

Best Original Screenplay: (Most Unique Plot/World)

The Hollow Boy (Lockwood & Co., #3)I Am Her Revenge
Ann: Hollow Boy by Jonathon Stroud. I feel like the plot of The Hollow Boy is unique and also I really like the whole series and all the characters who are so different.
Clare: I Am Her Revenge by Meredith Moore. This was such an interesting and compelling read. I wasn't sure about it at first but by the end I was gripped. It also has potentially the best (or worst) villain of my reading year.

Best Adapted Screenplay:(Best Book-to-Movie Adaptation)

Paper TownsMockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)
Paper Towns. Me and Clare got to watch Paper Towns 2 weeks early cause I have the best sister. I really enjoyed the film but Clare's pick is also a good one.
Clare: Mockingjay Part 2. This was just a great ending to the series. Although I am now incredibly sad that we have no more films to look forward to!

Best Animated Feature: (A book that would work well in animated format)

The Hollow Boy (Lockwood & Co., #3)Otto Von Trapezoid and the Empress of Thieves
Ann: The Hollow Boy by Jonathon Stroud. I feel like this book would make a very good animation. I don't know why I just feel it would be a good animation.
Clare: Otto Von Trapezoid and the Empress of Thieves by Jesse Baruffi. I struggled with this category at first but then I remembered this brilliantly weird book. It would make a perfect animation!

Best Director:(A writer you discovered for the first time)

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)More Than This
Ann: Sarah J. Maas. One of my friends at school and Clare both really liked the Throne of Glass series so I thought I would read them and I really enjoyed the first book.
Clare: Patrick Ness. I've held off on reading Patrick Ness for a long, long time and I can't for the life of me remember why. I loved all of his books that I read in 2015 and I am definitely planning on reading more!

Best Visual Effects:(Best Action in a Book)

Timebound (The Chronos Files, #1)Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)
Ann: Timebound by Rysa Walker. Although I didn't really enjoy this book. I really liked the action in it and it was done well.
Clare: Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I wasn't sure how exciting a book told in document form would be but I needn't have worried. There was never a dull moment in this and I loved the format.

Best Musical Score: (Best Music in a book-to-movie adaptation)

Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)Paper Towns
Ann: Mockingjay. Like Clare said these two films are the only Book- to -move- adaptations that we have seen so, they are the only ones that we could pick.
Clare: Paper Towns. Pretty sure these are the only two book-to-movie adaptations we've seen this year.

Best Short Film:(Best Novella or Short Book)

The Bane ChroniclesSimon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
Ann: The Bane Chronicles. I loved The Bane Chronicles so much, all the stories in it were so well thought out.
Clare: Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Outside of The Bane Chronicles I can't really remember any novellas I read this year so instead I have gone for the somewhat short Simon. I loved this book. It was so cute and left me feeling so happy.

Best Picture: (Best Stand-Alone)

The Catastrophic History of You and MeCarry On
Ann: The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenburg. I read this at the beginning of the year and I really enjoyed it.
Clare: Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. This book. I just love this book. I could honestly re-read it multiple times and never get bored.

Best Documentary: (Best Historical Fiction or Non-Fiction - we did both!)

Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1)Selp-Helf
The Haunting of Maddy ClareHow to Survive a Sharknado and Other Unnatural Disasters: Fight Back When Monsters and Mother Nature Attack
Ann: Anne of Green Gables and Selp Helf. Both of theses I loved so much, especially Anne of Green Gables which was so well written and done amazingly.
Clare: Historical: The Haunting of Maddy Clare. I have loved all her books this year and I can't wait for more in 2016. This is such a great, atmospheric read!
Fact: How to Survive a Sharknado. Shh, it totally is fact. Or at least written as fact. And I adore this book. I got it for Christmas and I have been slowly working my way through and loving every second.
