Wednesday Catch-Up 6th September 2017

Every Wednesday we are linking up with WWW Wednesday. WWW Wednesday is hosted at Taking on a World of Words and asks 3 questions: What are you currently reading?, What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you'll read next? You can click any of the images to go to the Goodreads page for that book!

Currently Reading:

A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3)
I am finally, finally reading A Court of Wings and Ruin! I felt myself falling into a reading slump so naturally I picked up the 700 page book I'd been too nervous to read? But I am loving it so far - I'm about a quarter of the way through and so anticipating wherever this is going!

Recently Finished:

About a Dog (A Bluff Point Romance #1)The Hearts We SoldDaughter of the Burning CityWater in May
About a Dog was a cute romance with an even cuter dog - if you're a fan of the genre this is definitely one I recommend picking up. I didn't fully fall in love with the romantic interest which was a shame but I adored the main character's friendship group! The Hearts We Sold was an intriguing premise. I really loved the characters and the writing, there were some flaws with the world building but for the most part I really enjoyed this (and absolutely love the Daemon). Daughter of the Burning City I LOVED. Loved. So much. I adored all the characters, the world, the plot, the writing - it was just everything that I had been hoping for. I will have a full review up for this on Saturday! Water in May was a good read, all the characters were compelling. I did have some issues with comments made about the LGBTQ community.

Planning to Read Next:

The Wish Granter (Ravenspire, #2)The Bone Witch (The Bone Witch, #1)Given to the Sea (Given Duet, #1)
I am in the biggest fantasy mood at the moment - which is good because I have a ton of unread fantasy on my shelves! The Wish Granter is one I've been really excited for. I loved the first Ravenspire novel and can't wait to dive into this one! The Bone Witch got a lot of hype and I'm frustrated I didn't pick it up when it first came out (my copy took a month to arrive despite being preordered) but I love the whole concept. And Mindy McGinnis is one of my all time favourite authors so I have fairly high hopes for Given to the Sea (although I have heard some bad things).

Wednesday Catch-Up 30th August 2017

Every Wednesday we are linking up with WWW Wednesday. WWW Wednesday is hosted at Taking on a World of Words and asks 3 questions: What are you currently reading?, What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you'll read next? You can click any of the images to go to the Goodreads page for that book!

Currently Reading:

About a Dog (A Bluff Point Romance #1)
I'm just starting About a Dog which I'm hoping will be a quick, fun, romantic read because that's what I am in the mood for right now. Anything with dogs is always going to be my kind of book and I actually love the cover for this because it's so summery and peaceful.

Recently Finished:

Invictus
I've only read one book this week because of a reading slump combined with illness - but it was a really good book! Invictus was a lot of fun to read with some great characters (Priya may be my favourite). Time travel, as always, makes my head spin and when you throw in paradoxes and people born "outside" of time and I will obviously get dizzy trying to wrap my head around it but Ryan Graudin did a pretty good job of making it relatively understandable for me.

Planning to Read Next:

Magic of Blood and Sea (The Assassin's Curse, #1-2)QueenEnrule (The Enrule, #1)
I have three of my favourite things on my TBR pile next! Pirates (and assassins), Tyrannical Queens and Zombies. OK maybe that's four things but I am excited!

Currently Reading:

Tash Hearts TolstoyInvictus
I am a few chapters in to Tash Hearts Tolstoy and am currently really liking it. The MC has a great voice and the side characters are interesting. We haven't really reached the main story yet but I am hoping to have more chances to read. I am also reading Invictus which is an ARC I got at YALC and am really excited about.

Recently Finished:

A Beautiful PoisonWantedShifting Sands: Tradecraft: Phase One
A Beautiful Poison was a darker mystery than I was expecting but it was so, so engaging. I finished it in one sitting and was just totally fascinated by the story and the characters. There are a few things that could have been better but overall I enjoyed it. Wanted was a disappointment however, I felt no connection to any of the characters and was just bored by the storyline. I still think this is a great series idea and I might read the third book when it comes out. And Shifting Sands was engaging and exciting, the characters were flawed but likable and the story line was realistic but non-stop. I really enjoyed this.

Planning to Read Next:

Water in MayAbout a Dog (A Bluff Point Romance #1)Magic of Blood and Sea (The Assassin's Curse, #1-2)
Water in May is one I know very little about but I've heard good things so I am excited to read this next. Then I will be reading About a Dog which looks cute and romantic and hey, has a dog in it so what isn't there to love? And then I really, really want to read Magic of Blood and Sea because it has pirates and assassins and there's just no way I could be less than extremely excited for that combination!

What do you think you'll read next? You can click any of the images to go to the Goodreads page for that book!

Currently Reading:

WantedA Beautiful Poison
I am currently reading two books - which is fairly unusual for me. I started Wanted which is an ARC I got at YALC (although it actually is already out now) and a sequel/companion novel to Spelled which I read and enjoyed last year. And I am buddy reading A Beautiful Poison with Vera @ Regal Critiques - I am about 50 pages into this one currently and am enjoying it although its a little more depressing than I had anticipated.

Recently Finished:

Pretty FierceBeing Miss NobodyPowerless
Pretty Fierce was a fun and exciting read, a little implausible at times but otherwise a good read. My full review can be found here. Being Miss Nobody was a very moving, very relatable account of social anxiety in secondary school and of cyber bullying. I found it to be a difficult read at times (as someone with social anxiety) but definitely worthwhile, my review for this will be going up tomorrow. And Powerless was a really great and exciting superhero/villain read. I would have liked more world building perhaps and could have done with a lot more explanation and backstory for where heroes and villains came from and what the actual difference between them is but I really enjoyed it and very much want to read the sequel. My review for this should go up on Saturday!

Planning to Read Next:

Shifting Sands: Tradecraft: Phase OneInvictusWater in May
My next planned read is Shifting Sands which I received for review recently. It looks like a good adventure/action read which is a kind of novel that I absolutely love so I am excited to get started on this one. I will then be reading Invictus which I got at YALC (and then got signed) it's time travel and a tight knit crew doing potentially not very legal things and I love that combination! And then I will be reading Water in May which I know very little about but everything I do know is good.

Currently Reading:

Pretty Fierce#GIRLBOSS
I'm pretty close to the end of Pretty Fierce and I've found it mostly enjoyable. There are a few moments where I became frustrated with the characters' actions or just felt like something straight up didn't make sense but if you can suspend disbelief for a bit this is a fun read. I am also currently reading #Girlboss which is inspiring me a lot!! I admire Sophia Amoruso so very much (and if you haven't already seen the Netflix series definitely watch it) and I'm enjoying reading this!

Recently Finished:

The Last MagicianHuntedThe Comfort of Secrets: A Sweet Lake NovelThe Epic Crush of Genie LoThe Arsonist
I was in an almost-reading-slump this time last week and The Last Magician did a pretty good job of getting me out of it! It was a very intriguing first book in the duology although I do wish it had been a bit more original? Hunted was just as good as I had hoped and better than I had expected which was lovely - and such a good Beauty and the Beast retelling! My review for The Comfort of Secrets went up yesterday (I loved it), it was a great follow up to Sweet Lake and I genuinely love these characters so much! My review for The Epic Crush of Genie Lo also went up yesterday and it was another much loved read! And finally I read The Arsonist which was a powerful and intriguing read - my review for this will go up tomorrow!

Planning to Read Next:

Stealing CandyBeing Miss NobodyPowerless
I am hoping to read Stealing Candy next which I know very little about. I got an ARC of it at YALC because I was intrigued by the kidnapping angle but I don't know much else beyond that and I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Being Miss Nobody is a book that's been on my radar for a while and I'm really intrigued to read it. And Powerless sounds right up my alley, with superheroes (and supervillains).

Currently Reading:

The Last Magician
I am currently about a quarter of the way through The Last Magician and really enjoying it! There are definitely shades of Six of Crows but I'm not as immediately hooked here. I do like all the main characters revealed so far though and I'm looking forward to seeing where this is going!

Recently Finished:

Absolutely nothing since last Wednesday!! We left for YALC early on Thursday and got back late Monday and I didn't do any reading whilst I was away! So I've got a lot of catching up to do!

Planning to Read Next:

The Comfort of Secrets: A Sweet Lake NovelThe Epic Crush of Genie LoThe Arsonist
Christine Nolfi very kindly sent me a copy of The Comfort of Secrets which is the second Sweet Lake novel! I loved the first one so I am very excited to pick this one up next! I will then be reading a couple of the August releases I picked up at YALC which are The Epic Crush of Genie Lo and The Arsonist both of which look absolutely incredible and I'm so excited to have them!!

Currently Reading:

The River at NightBecause You Love to Hate Me: 13 Tales of Villainy
I am about to start The River at Night which has been compared to The Descent (one of my all time favourite horror movies) so I have some pretty high hopes for this! I am about four stories in to Because You Love to Hate Me and I am so far really enjoying it!

Recently Finished:

DoonFinal GirlsSee What I Have DoneThe One Memory of Flora Banks
GirlhoodAfter the FireLetters to the LostMoxie
The First Days (As the World Dies, #1)Tiny Pretty ThingsShiny Broken Pieces (Tiny Pretty Things, #2)First We Were IV
We both took part in the 24in48 readathon this weekend which is why my recently finished is so insane! I'm too tired/lazy to give a summary of each book I read (there were twelve. Twelve.) but my absolute favourites were Moxie and Tiny Pretty Things. The latter by the way may be the most Slytherin book I have ever read. Everything else was varying levels of excellence there were no real disappointments.

Planning to Read Next:

The Informant (Kaz Phelps, #1)The Mourner (Kaz Phelps, #2)The Killer (Kaz Phelps, #3)
Next up I want to read The Informant, The Mourner and The Killer. Which are the first three books in the series - there may be more or there may not I'm actually not sure. But these do look incredible and I am excited for them!
