Sunday Post 8th May 2016

The Sunday Post STSmall_thumb[2]
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted at Caffeinated Book Reviewer, it's a chance to post a recap on the past week, show the books we have received and share what we plan for the coming week. Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews and the aim is to show our newest books and to see what everyone else received for review, borrowed from libraries, bought in bookshops or downloaded on to their e-reader. As always you can click on any of the pictures to be taken to the Goodreads page for that book if you're interested in finding out more about it.

Books We Got This Week:

A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2)The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo, #1)The Unexpected Everything
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas: I just needed this. I love all Maas's books and I don't expect this to be any different.
The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan: So excited to return to Camp Half-Blood! And maybe Percy? Fingers crossed!
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson: Morgan Matson books are always fun with a dollop of emotional and I am expecting great things from this! Despite having Amazon Prime this did not arrive on the release date (and apparently wouldn't for another couple of weeks) so I cancelled the order and went out to buy it instead and I am so glad I did.
PlayersThe Taxidermist's DaughterThe Dark Vampire (Last True Vampire, #3)
Players by Karen Swan: Karen Swan is a long time favourite author of mine so I had to snap this up when I saw it for a pound. It looks very good.
The Taxidermist's Daughter by Kate Mosse: I have actually never read a Kate Mosse book before. I actually tried to read Labyrinth back when it first came out but I was way too young to focus on it and I gave up after a couple of chapters. This looks like a great read and I am excited to give it a go.
The Dark Vampire by Kate Baxter: I have a soft spot for slightly dodgy covers. I was sent this by the publisher for review since we are taking part in a blog tour for this book on Thursday!

Reading Update:

Clare:
Barchester Towers (Chronicles of Barsetshire #2)Death at Gallows Green (The Victorian Mystery Series)Savage Magic
Barchester Towers by Anthony Trollope: 3 stars, This was my April Classics read and the second book in the Barchester Chronicles. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I enjoyed the first (The Warden) but it was still a good read and I look forward to continuing the series!
Death at Gallows Green by Robin Paige: 2.5 stars, I feel guilty for this because I am pretty sure it wasn't the books fault. But I just did not get absorbed in the story and I kept getting the urge to skip ahead. Will probably re-read this another time to see if I enjoy it more.
Savage Magic by Lloyd Shepherd: 2.5 stars, I found the mystery fairly easy to solve and most of the characters (with the exception of a couple) to be less than compelling. But the setting and depiction of the time were very evocative.
Brighton BelleLondon CallingEngland Expects
Brighton Belle by Sara Sheridan: 4 stars, A strong start to the series. Both Mirabelle and Vesta are strong and sympathetic characters and the mystery was compelling. There was plenty of action and a lot happens in very little time which makes it a fast-paced and exciting read.
London Calling by Sara Sheridan: 4 stars, Excellent mystery with strong historcial detail that doesn't shy away from the prejudice of the time. It's actually doubly disturbing since some of the racism would still be relevant today.
England Expects by Sara Sheridan: 4 stars, This was really interesting to me because I know freemasons (I am even related to some) so it was interesting to see them from a new perspective. Very chilling mystery and as always - I love Mirabelle Bevan. Definitely want to continue with this series.
Dead Cold (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #2)The Cruellest Month (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #3)The Murder Stone (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache #4)
Dead Cold by Louise Penny: 3 stars, A surprising and compelling mystery. Very humorous which I wasn't expecting.
The Cruellest Month by Louise Penny: 3 stars, I didn't find this mystery as compelling but it was still a good one and I loved the first sentence.
The Murder Stone by Louise Penny: 3 stars, I love that this series follows the same set of characters. Means I get attached to them.

  3. I liked The Hidden Oracle though not as much as the original Percy Jackson series or Heroes of Olympus. It was great to catch up with characters from the other series though and Apollo is entertaining as a protagonist.

I can't wait to read The Unexpected Everything. I've got that on my TBR pile and hopefully I'll get to it soon. I also want to read A Court of Mist and Fury. That Mirabelle Bevan mystery series looks fantastic! I love historical mysteries.

    1. The originals always seem to be the best dont they? But Apollo does sound like a great protagonist.
I am hoping to read The Unexpected Everything in the next week or so, hope you can get to it soon as well - and that its as good as we want it to be! The Mirabelle Bevan mysteries were great. I love historical mysteries but I dont think I've read ones set in the 1950's before so it was interesting!

  4. The new Riordan looks fun, and I like the cover of Players. The historical mysteries look promising too, I haven't read one of those in a while.

    1. Riordan books are always fun so I am definitely excited for that! And all my Karen Swan covers match which I am stupidly happy about!
I don't often read historical mysteries but I've enjoyed almost all the ones I read this last month - perhaps the Bevan ones most of all.

  5. I almost bought the Morgan Madson book yesterday but it's not my usual read - I think I was swayed by the dogs on the cover. That's not to say I still won't pick it up as it looks like an awesome vacation read. I read "The Taxidermist's Daughter" as an ARC and LOVED it. I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I'm not big on historical fiction. I always see such interesting books when I stop by. Hope you have a great reading week!

    1. If I didn't already love Matson's books I would totally have been swayed by the dogs on the cover! I am so glad you loved The Taxidermist's Daughter, really gives me hope that I will love it as well - I actually do like historical fiction so hopefully it will be great! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a great reading week too!
